File Extension Kml

The 'kml' acronym stands for "Keyhole markup language," which is an open, XML based language used for formatting information in a standardized way so that it can be applied across different software platforms. Specifically, the information stored in this type of file is spatial; the variables consist of coordinates in three dimensions. XML, like the more common web page language HTML is what is referred to as "human readable," meaning the code is based on alphanumeric characters and symbols that people are familiar with.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

David G.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

This type of organization is very convenient for the user because any free and simple text editor can decode the information in the file. More Info Regarding File Extension Kml

There are a few different programs that use this type of file, and their purposes are similar. What type of software could one logically assume would use coordinates? All of us are familiar with coordinates on a map, or perhaps a GPS tracking device; Google Earth, a stand alone software package independent of any web browser used for mapping and exploring the surface of the earth is one such program that is well equipped to utilize such information. One of the programs that uses the .kml extension is Google Earth, and the file in this case uses the coordinate values to represent latitude and longitude, while the third coordinate may optionally indicate elevation. Google Earth uses these files as location markers, which are by default placed on the earth's surface for reference, irregardless of the site's elevation. In addition to the physical location of the marker on the map, a name for the location as well as a brief description are the other pieces of data within a Google Earth .kml location marker file. Optionally and additionally, there may be icon or image files alongside the XML file.

Google Earth is but one such geographically oriented program; since the format is open, a great many software packages use this format for storing information about locations, including photo sharing sites, ancestry location charting software, Microsoft Visual Earth, Visual Nature Studio, and others. While this location based file format is quite often used to represent locations in real geographical areas in our world, it is also flexible enough to be used for some fully featured three dimensional modeling software, including another Google product, SketchUp. SketchUp files can be imported into Blender, the open source and completely free alternative to expensive commercial modeling software.

So save space and aid in organization, .kml files are sometimes distributed online as .kmz files, which are merely compressed .kml files archived using the zip format; To extract it to its usable, uncompressed .kml format, all that one needs to do is download and use the free version of WinZip, or any other extraction software with zip compatibility.

If you have stumbled across a .kml folder on your computer system and are unsure which program to use to open it, first try and view the contents of the file in question with any text editor. The contents should be relatively self explanatory, even if you are unfamiliar with the XML coding language. If, when trying view the textual data in your editor you receive an error message about the file not being readable, it is likely that the file has either been mislabeled or is corrupt. If you are certain of the dependability and authenticity of your file's source, and know exactly where it came from and you have received an unreadable error, the most likely scenario is that some data was lost during transmission and that the file is corrupted as a result. To be sure that such an error has not taken place, first try re-downloading said file, and if that doesn't work, if possible transmit the same file from another source. If this fixes the problem, then the file is corrupted at the server where it is remotely stored. If you have verified the contents of the file and are looking for the necessary program, keep in mind that since the standard is open, in most cases the files are compatible across different software platforms.
